It was only 10pm, and all the lights were off, but only because they had 4am drills the next morning. But Kangin was used to sleeping late and having to get up a few hours later, and he was wide awake. He could faintly hear someone snoring a few feet away, and the springs creaked as Jung Sook, who slept in the bottom bunk, shifted positions. There was a tiny murmuring sound 3 bunks away, and he guessed it was probably Min Jun dreaming about his mother’s kimbap again.
Then, it was quiet. Too quiet, in fact, that Kangin felt like his brain was going to explode. He wanted to scream, anything at all, to break the extreme silence ringing in his ears. It was impossible for him to fall asleep in complete silence, which was why he always used to go to bed with his iPod earphones plugged in. Some soldiers complain that what they wished they had were better food, or cleaner bathrooms, but the only thing Kangin wished for was his trusty iPod. He tried to remember the last time he tried sleeping without his mp3 player. It was about a year ago, halfway through promotions for Neorago when his iPod broke. Some nights, he’d borrow the other members’ iPods to their demise (“you used up all the battery last night, hyung!”), but one night when he found it particularly difficult to fall asleep, Jungsoo had sung him ‘You Are The One’ until he fell asleep. Kangin shuddered at the memory, and thought about how stupid it was to have needed Jungsoo to sing him to sleep. With a disgruntled sigh, (and a silent cursing at the army for not allowing mp3 players) he shut his eyes and resolved to sleep.
Half an hour later, just when Kangin was entering the land of Dreams, and just when he wasn’t fully conscious of the still silence anymore, the last thing on his mind was that what he really wanted, more than anything, was to hear Jungsoo’s voice singing him to sleep.
