It Has To Be Hyuk

Last year, when Eunhyuk guested in MBC's Fantasy Couple, us fans got a glimpse of how he viewed himself in Super Junior. The interview went a little bit like this:

MBC Fantasy Couple 2009
Little Girl: In Super Junior, who is the most good-looking?
Eunhyuk: Must I say it honestly? I think I'm number 1.
Little Girl: How about Kangin oppa?
Eunhyuk: Kangin hyung is a little bit at the back.
Little Girl: What about singing?
Eunhyuk: Oppa is a rapper. I'm probably number 12 out of 13.

Hyukjae was the guy who rarely got any singing lines in songs and was known to be the "Singing Hole" (Parallel to Kyuhyun being a 'Dancing Hole') in the group. He was the dancer and the main rapper, that was that. He didn't belt out high notes like Kyuhyun, Yesung and Ryeowook did, and if it wasn't for Sukira, us fans would never have been familiar with his singing voice. It wasn't until recently that Hyukjae started to come out of his singing shell. Songs like Good Person and My Only Girl gave us Hyukjae fans who were dying for some Hyuk singing goodness a pleasant surprise <3

Suddenly, Hyuk was singing more confidently on Sukira, and was just generally more comfortable singing. A lot of Hyukjae fans (myself included) got to thinking that maybe he took voice lessons, because his improvement was noticeable. We looked forward to the Pretty Action Quiz in Sukira, and half-wished that the people who'd call in would fail in their attempts, just so that Hyukjae would have to sing the lines all over again. He appeared on 1000 Songs Challenge, and JABJVBADKJB it was just SO adorable seeing him all jittery and nervous around two seasoned singers. (Yesung and Ryeowook)

Then, he gives us this.

No lie, when I saw this, I cried. Everything about this performance -- from Jungsoo's suspense-ridden intro, Hyuk's stretches, Hyuk facing the wall everytime there'd be a high note, Jungsoo helping him out, to him whispering the last notes from embarrassment and Jungsoo clapping like a proud umma -- was imperfectly imperfect. Hyuk's voice croaked at one point or two but to me, that's what made it so special. He's a work in progress, but his effort and his heart was in the moment and you could totally see that he was pushing himself and challenging himself to deliver. It also emphasizes one of the traits I love most about Hyuk: He never gives up. He doesn't stop at mediocrity (which was also why he quit Star King and Dream Team, which is to pursue and further his dancing) and really strives to reach his full potential. So it wasn't about him singing yet another song in Sukira, or that he was just doing fanservice. It was so much more than that, and him pushing through with it (because he didn't HAVE to sing, but he did) showed commitment and passion to better himself. He's walking proof that practice makes perfect, and that through hard work and perseverance, one can truly improve and become great at something. That's what made it so beautiful, to me.

I finally got to understand why Kyuhyun fans were so ecstatic that he started joining the main dancers in promotions and during dance battles. In that same respect, I can also understand why some Kyuhyun fans felt offended when Sungmin fans questioned his place in the dancing bridge of Bonamana. It's different, refreshing, and extremely exciting when your bias goes out of their comfort zone and does something else. (like Hyuk singing, or Kyu dancing) It's even more of a treat when that bias becomes good at their waterloo, and you end up beaming like a proud mom because they've come a long way since debut. Hyukjae has come a long way since the pre-debut video of him singing and rapping alternately, and I couldn't be more proud

Super Junior > 13

When Super Junior debuted as a project group in 2006 with 12 members, all the odds were working against them. They were a really large group that stuck out like a sore thumb among the solo Kpop artists and small idol groups. They had a chubby member, members who couldn't sing, members who couldn't dance, and a member who looked like a female (lol!). Their concept was very different from other artists and they weren't like the typical 'idols:' They cried often, they were funny, and at times, embarrassing. They were also a rotation group, with a remake as their very first title song. They didn't take their image so seriously.. they were just so different, in so many ways.

But they made it, they won awards and soared to the top of Korean charts, against all the odds, and are now considered legends in their own right. (because you gotta admit, they play in a different field and are a league all on their own)

People on Twitter and generally in the fandom are abuzz with the news about a new debut group with 17 members debuting.. some are afraid that they'll be a threat to Super Junior and that they'll kick them off their 'biggest group' title.

But you know what? It's not about the number anymore. At one point, it was, and it was such a novelty to have so many members. But somewhere along the way a long time ago, Super Junior stopped being just the boy group with the most members, but so much more than that. They grew to be well-rounded entertainers with different talents and successful in their respective fields. They've become so much more than just a 13-member boy group, and as cliche' as it sounds, they've become a family, of sorts.

A number has, and always will be, just a number. It doesn't guarantee anything: not fame, not success, not the thousands of fans SJ has in Korea and overseas. I don't think ELF should be worried at all, because it's really easy to become the largest idol group - just add more members than Super Junior. Sure, they may have more members, but so what? :) What Super Junior is now, how respected and established they are in the industry, and how loved they are in the international market, are things that can't be taken away just like that.

Super Junior's strength is not measured by their number, but rather, measured by their heart. And we all know the boys have got the biggest hearts, no doubt, so no worries :)

Day 2: Your Favorite OTP

Most Hyukjae fans would pick EunHae in a heartbeat, mainly because they're the closest thing to being a real, romantic couple. I have fandom friends who actually wish the boys were together in real life and gay for each other.. but I just don't dig the whole boy to boy romantic pairings. More of a personal preference, really :) To be honest, I actually avoid pairings to any romantic level altogther, and shudder at the thought of reading smut between the Super Junior members. I know that some people enjoy reading smut fics, and that's perfectly okay. It's just not my cup of tea, that's all :)

Now that I've established that I don't like shipping SJ members together romantically, I'll go on by saying that there is not just one couple I 'ship.' There are so many couples I love together but the one that surpasses them all for me is EunTeuk.

The thing about the EunTeuk couple is that they're always together and yet, people never ship them romantically. I think it's because their relationship is purely brotherly and any romantic connection between them would just be plain wrong >.< Incest, anyone? XD What I love about these two is that they're like two peas in a pod. I feel like Jungsoo's the big brother Hyukjae tries to emulate the most, and Jungsoo's sort of taken Hyuk under his wing. They depend on each other, in a way that is different from the other members. I love EunTeuk also because I'm in love with both Hyukjae and Jungsoo ♥

Photos shared to me by fellow EunTeuk shipper and Jungsoo's wifey, Jafie :)

This Is Why We Need Subtitles

I'm not Charice's biggest fan, and I wasn't even long before I was an ELF. I never liked that she mimics her singing heroes (if it wasn't obvious enough, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion) down to the runs and even their gestures when they sing. I found her to be awfully smug in interviews and just generally, not a very likable person. My uncle and his friends (they're airline pilots) have had many chances to meet her when traveling abroad, and in many instances, Charice was, to put simply, conceited. What is most upsetting is that it's almost as if any Filipino who doesn't support Charice (or kiss the ground she walks on) is pegged to be 'jealous' or someone who has a crab mentality. It's almost as if it's a treason to not like her, which stands in stark contrast to Western music, where it's perfectly alright to not be a fan of an artist who is from the same country.

Poetry In Motion

Hyukjae, I am in love with you. And sometimes, words fail and words can't encapsulate just how precious and wonderful you are, as a person. Please sing Bird during SuperShow3. The song itself isn't ground-breaking, but the way you are in it.. it's every single aspect of you that I love so much, it's got you rapping and dancing amazingly, it's got your wit and humor, it has your charm and sex appeal, it has your cute sheepish side, how you're really a tad bit shy when shoved in the spotlight, it's got fan interaction (because you are kind of a snob in real life compared to the other members /sadface) and it's got your infectious gummy smile.

Long Overdue

I was never able to fully sort out my feelings for Hangeng. Some days, I'm angry at him for not giving the other members a heads up, on others, I feel sorry for everything he's gone through and feel like he's in a better place. Sometimes I can't even bring myself to look at his new pictures, even though I say I support him.

Lately I've been at a loss for what exactly it was I was feeling. I've been so confused, because I SAY I support him, but whenever news of him crops up, my face doesn't light up like it does when it's news about Hyukjae, or the other members. I know I'm supposed to be happy for him, like any good ELF should be. I'm not supposed to sigh and furrow my brow after seeing his concert posters, or seeing photos of him rehearsing. I'm supposed to grin and smile at my computer screen and be able to say wholeheartedly, "I'm happy you're happy."

... But I'm not happy. I do not jump for joy when he releases a new song, and I don't squeal in delight whenever there's a new photo or show he guests in. I am not happy, because it still hurts. A lot.

But that's not to say I hate him, because I don't. I do support him, and I want what is best for him and I want him to be able to work towards the dreams and goals he has set for himself. But right now, I'm still not quite over him officially pursuing a solo career, and it hurts to see him apart from Super Junior.

You can call me 'selfish' or whatever derivative of the word; Maybe I am, maybe I'm not. All I know is that I've invested way too much heart, emotion and energy into loving this Korean group, that it's still painful, even after 6 months. So I'm not quite ready to say 'I'm happy for you, Geng.' Because it's hard, it's not the truth.. because I know it's still freaking painful for the members, no matter how much they try to mask their true feelings. I do support him, and of COURSE I want him to do AMAZING with his new solo career. Just give me a few more months and I'll be able to say, wholeheartedly, that I'm happy for him.

Day Thirteen

Day 13: A K-Pop Group You Dislike and Why
LOL, I will SO get bricked for this.

Eunhyuk, Are You Sick?

I feel terrible looking at these photos. He's perspiring so much and that's not something that usually happens to him... Sure, he sweats during performances but not to the point that his face is glazed with perspiration. Last week in Inkigayo, he was sweating so much that his whole neck was matted with it, and it was already soaking through his crew-neck shirt. I may be overanalyzing things (like always) but IDK, I can't help but think he's sick or something. I mean, he hasn't been completely himself lately so maybe it has a correlation? (Lol, I sound so stupid overanalyzing everything. But he's lost some weight, too.)

I don't know, what do you think? :(

Dear Hyukjae

Glad to have you back. I've missed you so much.

Day Twelve

Day 12: The first K-Pop song you ever heard
Answer The Phone by Mina
This video brings back such memories! XD I remember the first time I saw it on TV I was baffled by the lyrics and was confuzzled at how anyone could memorize such difficult lyrics, lol 8D Hey, at that time I was into F4 and the lyrics to their songs were all just one syllable. XD

Day Eleven

Day 11: Your favorite K-Pop Music Video

First of all, I'm answering a LOT of the K-Pop meme days' categories now because I already want to start on the 30-day Super Junior meme. I'm Super Junior biased so you get my drift ;) Anyway I have four favorite Music Videos.

1. Best Drama: Lee Hyori's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
From the video, you can tell that they set aside a lot of budget making it. I loved it because it had so many scenes, and it was very complex with a lot of drama. I didn't get bored a single second watching it. :D Plus, her outfits were outrageous! Gotta love Lee Hyori ;)

2. Best Dancing: Boa's Eat You Up
I saw BoA's Eat You Up a LONG time ago and I was just blown away by how cool she was, lmao XD But seriously, her dancing is just so amazing. She's the best female dancer in K-Pop, in my opinion, because she can execute steps without looking slutty haha 8D The MV itself was building up to the bridge area till the end, it had lots of drama as well and very entertaining :)

3. DBSK's Mirotic
This MV and song is just extremely addicting, and everything about DBSK just seems otherworldly. Like SJ, they're in a completely different league of their own and they don't have to do all the electronic effects and flashing lights in the middle most new groups debut with. Sad to say, this was the first video I ever saw of theirs and I feel bad that I hadn't discovered them earlier. :(

4. Super Junior's It's You
This was tough because I'm in love with so many of SJ's videos (due to the different emotions it imparts) but then I love It's You the most. <3 Do I have to explain myself? Everything in the video's just perfect. Plus, it's the last MV where they were all complete.

Day Ten

Day 10: A K-Pop Dance You'd Like To Learn

I'd really like to learn either Don't Don or Man In Love. Those two songs are so well choreographed, and every moment there is something exciting going on. It's also my SJ pride talking because the members themselves made the powerful dance for Don't Don.

Back when I didn't care for SJ, in 2008, I was watching the MTV Movie Awards on the television and I saw them dance Man In Love. At that time, I was supposed to choreograph a dance for our pep squad, and the bridge  after they "Go Down To The Basement" inspired me so much that I searched for Super Junior on Youtube because it was THAT awesome. XD Still, the dance wasn't enough to get me hooked on Super Junior because it was only in June of 2009 that I got into them. I'll say to my defense though, in 2008 I was into rock and alternative, so Super Junior songs really weren't my style. Ugh, regret. 8D

Day Nine

Day Nine: Your favorite K-Pop Performance

I can't find it on YouTube anymore T__T But it was the performance when Eunhyuk, Donghae and Sungmin danced to a remix of Sorry Sorry in the beginning, then the other members entered through this big stage door setup behind them. That performance was just absolutely mindblowing <3 If the picture above isn't enough indication of how pumped they were (look at the look on Hyuk's face, omg) then I don't know what. XD

Oh My God

Shindong Is Getting Married!

Garnering much interests for losing 20kg early last year, Super Junior ShinDong revealed that he had gone on a diet so as to get together with his girlfriend, who broke up with him, again.
ShinDong talked about his girlfriend, 2 years younger than him, that on SBS Strong Heart aired on 6th July. He explained, “To say the truth, my girlfriend is a junior at college. I’m in the class of 04 and she is in the class of 06. I did not meet my girlfriend until graduation. I received my graduation album and I was asked if I received my TA and I joked “Can I choose from here?’. So there was this photo of my girlfriend in the album, and when I saw it, I said ‘this is the one’ and I asked for the professor to link us up.”

ShinDong said, “We were going out for about 1 year when we told our parents about it but they objected so we broke up. Back then my weight was 104 kg, and it was hard gaining weight. I guess it was because I kept eating.”
He continued, “So I started my diet and shed 24 kg. To say the truth, after I broke up with my girlfriend, I had a phone conversation with her, and she made an unreasonable request for me to loose weight. I lost 10 kg but she refused to get back with me. So I lost another 10 kg and in all I lost 20 kg, and finally she got back with me.”
Also on the show that day, ShinDong revealed that he is currently preparing to get married with his girlfriend. And he did a video message to his girlfriend on the show, “I have not proposed properly to you yet. Nari ah, the thing I feel the most after I’ve met you is that without you I feel heartache. And I feel for the first time that if there is you, I would feel happy always. Will you be with me happily forever? Will you marry me?”
ShinDong also did a video message to both their parents, “I have confidence. Because I have confidence that we will be happy forever, please approve and bless us.”

Everyone on SJ-World is happy for him, but am I the only one who is bothered by this? Why do I get the feeling that Nari takes Shindong for granted so often? Shindong, after having proposed to her, mentioned on a show that she was ignoring him after his proposal... and this news.. that she broke up with him because of his weight is unsettling, to say the least.

I'm one of those people who isn't possessive over the boys. If they get girlfriends, so be it! If they're happy, I'm happy. It's easy to say, I know, but they deserve to love and be loved for real. I may not be possessive, but I am protective. (My sister and I were talking about this recently) I don't like keeping them all to myself; but I do have a problem when someone likes them for the wrong reasons, and I get rattled when a girl abuses their kind nature. (case in point: ISF, which I will talk about in another entry)

So for me to read this about Nari.. it speaks a lot about her character. I want the best for Shindong and I actually feel that he is the most susceptible to heartaches. She's pretty and he probably thinks she's a good catch, and he'll probably do whatever it takes to keep her happy - and this worries me. I don't want Shindong bending over backwards and working so hard just to please someone. That someone should love him for him; Not his celebrity status, not his idol connections, not his weight.

Don't get me wrong, I want him to get married. I really do. I'm real happy that he's found someone to call his own, but I'm just afraid that he's settling for a pretty girl who reciprocates his feelings.

Day Eight

The 8th Day of the KPOP meme: A KPOP song you know all the words to

It's gotta be Sorry Sorry or Marry U, for me. I'm familiar with a LOT of Super Junior songs but I know Marry U & Sorry Sorry so well that I can sing it to a Korean and they would think I spoke the language. XD To be honest, the first time I heard a Korean song (it was Pick Up The Phone by Mina, if I'm not mistaken) I thought that it'd be extremely difficult to familiarize myself with the words. At that time, I was into Taiwanese Pop and the words were easy to pick up because it's monosyllabic. Anyway, I can't believe it but now, I've become comfortable with singing to hangul and it's much easier to familiarize myself with Korean lyrics.. I guess I got used to it? XD It took me a while to memorize It's You even after listening to it so many times but I kind of memorize No Other already. XD

For Kangin

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.” - Neil Gaiman

.. And it's true. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite authors and he captured heartache perfectly. It was a long time since I cried that hard, the day Kangin went to the army, July 5th. I must be a masochist because while I was looking through the heartbreaking photos of Kangin and the boys, I had my iPod plugged in and I was listening to 잠시만Goodbye (A Short Journey). I was bawling my eyes out and cried until my heart hurt; It was painful, a ripping pain, a heart burn. A real soul-hurt. There's not much I can say about the other day that hasn't already been said, but for the record, I'll wait.

Today when the sun sets and the moon rises again, it's still the same
Don't ever think nothing's going to change with you gone.
You've left a hole and we'll patiently wait for that void to be filled when you return.
Oh why is my heart changing this fast,
Your appearance that resembled the blue sky rains
And when you return, we'll shower you with love and support,
and show you the best and most overwhelming sapphire blue sea.

In the past when you did whatever you wanted and was foolish, you who we embraced amidst everything, are really precious. My heart that loved you, our eyes that saw you.. we'll wait.

Dear Anonymous

Stumbled upon this secret on a Tumblr blog. For the record, I don't think they're faking their smiles. Super Junior's personality is the type to smile even amidst all the drama. They're a lighthearted, goofy group that take life as it is. Their energetic, bubbly, and this 'new' concept isn't new at all, because this is who they are. If anything, what's "fake" isn't their smiles, but the shirt lifting, abs-bearing Bonamana concept. But don't get me wrong, I loved the Bonamana concept as well because it was something Super Junior never did before. They were manlier, and sexier, and as a fan, I appreciated it a lot XD But No Other is like going back to how they really are, and it's very reminiscent of old songs like Haengbok, and Miracle. I don't know about you, but this is the Super Junior I know and love. This isn't fake one bit. :)

P.S. I do feel bad for the Hottests; If I were a Hottest, I wouldn't exactly want the group I love to be singing about how they'll "be okay without you." I respect 2PM and actually think they get along well with Super Junior, and I also happen to think that it's time people got over all the Jay drama.

Day Seven

DAY 7: A K-POP SONG THAT MAKES YOU CRY

I am one of those people who cries over the smallest things. I don't mean that I cry over petty things; Petty is different from what I mean by 'the smallest things.' I don't cry over a broken nail or a failed quiz, but I do cry over songs, all the time. In the past month there have been four K-Pop songs that made me cry.  (Well, one doesn't count because I cried more over the characters' acting in the MV)

I'm a rebel and I don't want to pick just one. \o/ Get a box of tissues ready, if you're the kind of person who can easily connect to a song.

1. Don't Love by FT Island (사랑하지마요)

Hongki's voice is like a crying violin; it has so much emotion that you don't even need the English translations to tell you that he's singing about his heart breaking into a million pieces. His voice was enough for me to shed a few tears; but the English translations on the screen of the video made me literally bawl my eyes out.
My favorite line: Don't love, goodbye always comes.

2. Cold Hearted Man by TRAX (가슴이 차가운 남자)
When I loaded this video early this year (because Heenim is in it), I didn't get to watch it. At that time, Heenim wasn't my favorite member (that'd be an understatement) and I hated his beggar hair. So the first few seconds put me off, and I didn't give it a chance. (Regret, regret) Recently, I was researching on Heenim videos (Because, well, he's kind of one of my favorites now, lol XD) and I came across the video of him singing and playing the piano on an episode of Family Outing. I fell in love with the song and researched on it, and I realized that it was the very same video Heenim was in back in January. I watched it, and I cried. I think one of the main reasons why I cried was because he was crying. He rarely shows emotion, and the feelings he was showing in the video were painful to watch... because it was around the same time Hangeng slapped a big fat lawsuit on SM. Now, I don't know about you, but those tears in the video, to me, are very very real.

3.여행Goodbye (A Short Journey) by Super Junior

Kangin isn't my bias in Super Junior, but the moment his voice came on in the track, I couldn't stop the tears from flowing down my cheeks. Super Junior has gone through so much in the past year, and Kangin was one of those that caused everyone so much sadness. He made mistakes, and he's had to make amends for those mistakes by not being around for activities. I miss him terribly, and I know that he's just another member to add to the MIA list, but he's different. Kangin wants to be around. He wants to be onstage singing and dancing with his members, he longs to witness another sapphire blue sea. His heart is in Super Junior, and this song is proof that he treasures the other members so much, and vice versa. The collaboration between Eunhyuk and Donghae for this song was amazing; It's like they both understood the kind of emotion they wanted to allay, and they were able to make the music and lyrics come together so beautifully. *sigh* This is my favorite song from the repackaged album, without a doubt.
Favorite lines:
Today when the sun sets and the moon rises again, it's still the same.
When I did whatever I wanted and was foolish, you who embraced all of that are really precious.

One Day Left

Heechul's latest tweet said:

I don't speak nor understand Korean, but according to Google translate and people on Twitter, Kangin is in their dorm along with the members of TRAX, SHINee (and their manager hyung).. and they're all playing Playstation 3 together. *cries* One day left, you guys.

Under Construction

In the process of changing my layout, so everything's still kind of in disarray. :(
YAY! I'm finished editing it! It's COMPLETELY different from my last one, but I really like it :) PLUS, it's CSS based (unlike the HTML based Minihompy layout) so everything is easy to edit. :) Which one do you think is better, this one or the last one? XD
